Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has emphasized the importance of converting the military pressure on Gaza into a diplomatic deal to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, according to a report by The Times Of Israel.

Speaking to the families of the captives, Gallant stressed that the primary objective of the defense establishment is to bring the hostages home by leveraging the current military situation.

“The entire defense establishment sees the return of the hostages as the main goal to be pursued. We must do everything we can to take advantage of the situation that has been created,” Gallant stated. He noted that the military pressure exerted on Gaza has set the stage for potential negotiations and that this opportunity should not be missed. Gallant assured the families that the military is prepared to halt operations and resume combat if necessary, indicating a flexible approach to both military and diplomatic strategies.

His remarks come in the wake of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent statement that Israel would not accept any deal with Hamas unless it ensures the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) can resume fighting after the initial phase of the agreement. Netanyahu's comments, made just before the resumption of ceasefire talks, have been interpreted by critics as an attempt to derail the progress of negotiations.

Gallant's address to the hostage families appears to be an effort to reassure them that the government is committed to their cause, while also navigating the complex dynamics of military and diplomatic efforts.
