The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has questioned and subsequently released Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, a former Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State, after he was grilled for several hours over alleged financial impropriety.

Akinterinwa, who was one of the 16 aspirants that contested the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Ondo State, praised the EFCC operatives for their professionalism and civility during the questioning. He stated that he assured the anti-graft agency of his full cooperation in their investigations, indicating a constructive and transparent engagement with the EFCC.

According to Sahara Reporters, the EFCC's invitation to Akinterinwa came after earlier reports had surfaced claiming that he was already in the custody of the anti-graft agency to answer questions about the alleged mismanagement of billions of naira during the administration of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in Ondo. However, Akinterinwa swiftly denied these reports, describing them as surprising and stating that the stories were circulated by those who saw him as a threat to their interests and vision.

Akinterinwa's participation as an aspirant in the APC governorship primary election, which was won by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa amid allegations of irregularities, has added to the political dynamics in Ondo State. The former Finance Commissioner's interaction with the EFCC has raised questions about the potential links between the primary election process and ongoing investigations into financial matters in the state.

Prior to the EFCC's questioning, Akinterinwa had announced that he would honor the anti-graft agency's invitation on Thursday to provide more information on certain matters the commission wanted clarification on. This proactive approach by Akinterinwa suggests a willingness to cooperate with the authorities and address any concerns they may have regarding his role or involvement in financial matters during his tenure as Finance Commissioner.

The release of Akinterinwa by the EFCC, coupled with his praise for the professionalism and civility of the operatives, indicates that the questioning was conducted in a manner that respected due process and the rights of the individual.
