Why Marcus Rashford was not involved for Man Utd against Sheffield Utd

According to 90min, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag found himself compelled to exclude Marcus Rashford from his squad for the match against Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Rashford had played the full 90 minutes in the gripping FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City at Wembley over the weekend.

However, an injury sustained during that game was sufficient to sideline him for the visit of the Blades, a match that ended 4-2 despite United falling behind twice, leaving Rashford out of contention altogether.

This setback delays Rashford's milestone 400th appearance for the club until at least the upcoming weekend.

Several of Ten Hag's selection choices were influenced by injuries, leaving him with little choice.

In Rashford's absence, Antony was granted only his second Premier League start of 2024.

Although there were pre-match indications that Amad Diallo might receive his first start for United since 2021, this did not materialize.

Meanwhile, Casemiro was tasked with filling in at center-back alongside Harry Maguire for the second consecutive game.

Among the defenders currently sidelined with injuries are Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Willy Kambwala.

Further up the field, Christian Eriksen was introduced into the midfield, potentially linked to reports of new technical director Jason Wilcox aiming for a possession-based style.

Despite his significance last season, the Dane has mostly been a peripheral figure in recent months, having played only 37 minutes of Premier League football since January prior to kick-off against Sheffield.

Although Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho were nursing knocks from the weekend, both started the match, while Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay were named among the substitutes.

Mason Mount remained absent after being unavailable against Coventry, having only returned from a four-month absence due to a knee injury at the end of March.

The injury crisis left United's bench notably lacking in experience. Louis Jackson, 18, Harry Amass, 17, Habeeb Ogunneye, 18, and Ethan Wheatley, 18, all retained their places in the squad from Wembley.

Wheatley ultimately made an appearance on the pitch, becoming the 250th academy graduate to feature for the club.
