The Lagos State government, through one of its agencies, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), on Friday, June 28, 2024, sealed off a public toilet found to have been used as residence by a large number of commercial motorcycle riders in the Egbeda area of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the state, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development on his X handle, saying the agency visited the public toilet at Ogunlana Street, Egbeda, and sealed it off in response to a public complaint over the toilet that was turned into residence.

According to the commissioner, the agency discovered that many commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders, have turned the public toilet into shelter, living and engaging in domestic activities inside the building.

Scenes at the public toilet, as posted by the commissioner on Friday.

The commissioner wrote: "The visit to the toilet by the agency revealed that there was a large volume of untreated wastewater being discharged into the public drainage, causing foul smell in the community, which serves as a potential source of contamination to the ground water, and there was also unruly behaviour of the riders."

The commissioner therefore disclosed that following the observation by officials of LSWMO, it was agreed that in order to ensure sanity in the public toilet which had been turned into shelter by the Okada riders, there was the need to seal off the facility.

He urged residents of the state to desist from doing any untoward things that can lead to the spread of Cholera in the state.
