National Grid Fully Restored After Collapse, TCN Confirms

According to reports from Vanguard, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national power grid has been restored following a partial collapse on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

This incident marks the third partial grid disturbance and the first total disturbance this year, according to TCN officials.

Ndidi Mbah, the TCN Public Affairs General Manager, provided details about the incident, stating that the grid collapse was triggered by the unexpected tripping of three units of a power-generating station, which resulted in the sudden removal of 313MW from the grid.

This sudden drop in generation led to a dip in frequency, causing system instability and the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.

In response to the incident, the system operator quickly acted to island a section of the grid, including the Ibom Power Station, which allowed them to continue feeding power to areas such as Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, and Calabar, even as the rest of the grid experienced a blackout.

"The operators commenced grid restoration efforts immediately after the incident," Mbah stated. "At about 21.57 hrs yesterday, the entire part of the grid that was affected by today's incident was successfully restored."
