Kisumu – A devastating accident at the Coptic roundabout in Mamboleo has resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to five others.

The incident occurred on July 3, 2024, when a lorry transporting Shibe maize flour lost control and plunged into a ditch, scattering packets of flour across the road.

Witnesses reported that the lorry, which was navigating a steep hill, veered off the road before careening into the ditch.

The impact was severe, causing the lorry's head and carriage to detach and land on opposite sides of the road. This tragic event disrupted traffic and drew a large crowd of local residents, who rushed to the scene in an effort to help with rescue operations.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle due to the steep incline, leading to the catastrophic plunge. "The lorry was coming down the hill when it suddenly swerved off the road and fell into the ditch," a witness at the scene said. "People quickly gathered to help, but it was clear the situation was very serious."

Emergency responders, along with local residents, worked frantically to extract those trapped in the wreckage. Amid the chaos, some residents were seen attempting to take packets of maize flour from the scattered cargo. Despite these efforts, three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and five others sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Authorities arrived promptly to cordon off the area and manage the traffic disruption caused by the accident. The scene of the crash, marked by the disarray of the lorry and its scattered load, highlighted the severity of the incident. Efforts to recover the bodies and provide medical attention to the injured were undertaken with urgency.

The Kisumu County police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Preliminary reports suggest that mechanical failure or the challenging road conditions may have contributed to the lorry losing control.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is also involved in assessing the safety measures on the steep incline where the accident occurred.
