The Nigerian electricity sector grapples with various forms of corruption, ranging from political corruption to petty and private-to-private corruption. These corrupt practices permeate all stages of the supply chain, causing significant challenges for the country. Among the consequences are frequent power outages, low levels of electricity access, and the favoring of politically connected investors, all of which contribute to consumer dissatisfaction. Demands for bribes further exacerbate the situation, creating additional hurdles for both consumers and industry players. These corruption risks pose a significant obstacle to Nigeria's transition to renewable energy sources.

In a video shared on YouTube by Arise TV, the Honorable Minister of Power, Adelabu Adebayo, addressed the issue of corruption within the electricity distribution sector. Speaking candidly, he acknowledged the pervasive nature of corruption and emphasized the government's commitment to tackling this challenge head-on. He expressed confidence in the leadership of President Tinubu, affirming his dedication to combating corruption within the sector.

Minister Adebayo drew attention to the existence of powerful cartels and cabals within the electricity distribution sector, which perpetuate corrupt practices and contribute to systemic inefficiencies. He pointed out a significant discrepancy, highlighting that if three million meters had been procured in 2003, the current gap in metering infrastructure would not be as pronounced.

Hear him: "We're aware of the corruption in the power sector. We have the trust in Mr President and he's ready to stay with us to fight this corruption. We have cartels we have cabals. If 3 million meters have been procured in 2003 will not be talking about this magnitude of gap in our metry penetration".
