Kumuyi to Church Leaders: "If You Can't Do Your Duty, You Shouldn't Call Yourself a Leader"

In a powerful sermon titled "Purging And Preserving The Church From The World’s Corruption" delivered at the Workers Training Service, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, issued a stern admonition to church leaders.

He stressed the critical importance of fulfilling their responsibilities, warning that those who fail in their duties should not consider themselves leaders.

"Leaders set over the churches have a responsibility to carry out," Kumuyi stated. "If they cannot do their duty, there is no use calling themselves leaders, preachers, or servants of God. The servant of God is known, not by the title or position, but by the responsibilities he carries out."

Pastor Kumuyi questioned the purpose of church leadership in the context of God’s plan, emphasizing that mere access to the Bible and the internet does not replace the role of church leaders. "Some people do not know the advantage of church leadership. They claim to have everything from their Bibles to the Internet for their spiritual growth at their disposal. Such people should know that social media cannot correct, rebuke, or discipline them when they go into error. It will not question or help you to stand. It is not just a servant we are talking about here, but a godly servant."

He elaborated on the responsibilities of a godly servant, drawing parallels with Apostle Paul's dedication to the Corinthian church. "As a father in the family who may not always be around still shows concern for the family, Apostle Paul weighed in on all the issues happening in the Corinthian church. So, after the church service, the work of the pastor has not ended. He will continue to ruminate on all the reports and goings-on in the church. This will help him to prepare the next messages."

Kumuyi emphasized that a true leader’s work extends beyond physical presence, highlighting that leadership involves continuous care and guidance. "Apostle Paul was not present in the Corinthian church but he addressed them as if he was with them. Parents can tell their children to go to school with the confidence that their spirits are with them, and that they are praying for them. They will also tell them to ensure that they remember their homes and all that they have learned. This is what a leader does, he is leading the church all the time, from wherever he is."

He concluded with a reminder to church leaders about their ultimate accountability. "Even when you are away from the church, ensure that you lead your members because you are going to give accounts over them."
