Fubara Slams PDP: Rivers People Deserve Better

opera.com 4 days ago

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has openly criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing it of neglecting its responsibilities amidst the ongoing political turmoil in the state. During a meeting with the Senate Committee on Privatization and Commercialization led by Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, Fubara emphasized that Rivers State now prioritizes truth and local autonomy over partisan interests. He emphasized a commitment to defending democracy independently of party affiliations, stating, "We are standing firmly on Rivers State's ground to uphold democracy, not tethered to any party but to our principles."

The critique underscores a broader rift within the PDP, notably involving Fubara and his former mentor, Nyesom Wike. Recently, 60 PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives demanded the resignation of the party's acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, alleging his alignment with Wike's faction and failure to address the crisis. They pointed to Damagum's inaction during defections from the PDP in Rivers State and threats against the governor.

Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu has pledged to facilitate dialogue, announcing plans to meet with both President Bola Tinubu and Nyesom Wike to seek resolution. Kalu stressed adherence to legal processes and urged for peace amidst the political upheaval in Rivers State.
