Prominent Nigerian actor and lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to pave the way for peace in the southeast region. Okonkwo believes that Kanu's continued detention is tantamount to political imprisonment, and that his release would be a wise move to reconcile the southeast with the rest of the nation.

In a recent interview with Arise News, Okonkwo stated, "The federal government has a lot of places it can stand to release Nnamdi Kanu and bring peace to the southeast. He is now more likely a political prisoner." He emphasized that the longer Kanu remains in prison, the more his stature grows, while the government's image diminishes. Okonkwo encouraged the government to adopt an intelligent approach and release Kanu, just as they have done with other political detainees.

In his own words, “He is now more likely a political prisoner. I tell you something, the longer Nnamdi Kalu is in prison the taller he becomes and the shorter the government becomes. They should take the intelligent way and release him like they did to other people. They should rehabilitate him and reconcile him as they are reconciling Southeast completely to the Nation.”
