According to a report by DAILY POST, the Nigerian Senate has passed into law the bill for the establishment of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), a move aimed at addressing the various developmental challenges facing the North Central region of the country.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Abba Patrick Moro, the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, and other senators from the North Central region, was passed on Thursday after it had previously failed to receive presidential assent in the 9th Senate.

In his lead debate, Senator Moro argued that the commission, when established, would be responsible for receiving and managing funds from the federal government and donors for the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration, and reconstruction of roads, houses, and business premises of flood victims.

It would also address the farmers-herders clashes, communal clashes, construction of large format drainage systems, dredging of the Niger and Benue rivers to control floods, and tackle the menace of poverty, illiteracy, and other related environmental or developmental challenges facing the North Central region.

The passage of the bill followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Special Duties submitted during the plenary session.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, congratulated Senator Moro and all those who contributed to the success of the bill.

He expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu would assent to the bill for the overall development of the North Central region, which comprises Kogi, Niger, Benue, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
