According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United has officially appointed Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director after prolonged negotiations with Newcastle United, as reported by The Athletic.

Ashworth's arrival at Old Trafford faced delays due to compensation disputes between the clubs. However, following over four months on gardening leave, a deal has been finalized, and the 53-year-old will commence his duties immediately.

Ashworth was prepared to take legal action against Newcastle to expedite his move, with Manchester United reportedly ready to cover any associated costs.

In his new role, Ashworth will oversee football performance, recruitment, and operations for the Red Devils. He will work alongside technical director Jason Wilcox and report to Sir Dave Brailsford, who is leading a strategic review of United's football structure under co-ownership with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ashworth is renowned for his astute player recruitment and the establishment of robust footballing frameworks, making United hopeful that he will play a pivotal role in the club's resurgence.

With key positions filled in the club's hierarchy, Manchester United is now focusing on securing a new contract for manager Erik ten Hag, while their summer transfer plans are also taking shape.

The club has identified Joshua Zirkzee as a potential addition to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund in attack. Zirkzee, the Dutch centre-forward, played a crucial role in Bologna's qualification for the Champions League, tallying 11 goals and four assists in 34 Serie A appearances.

Another priority for United is strengthening the defensive midfield position following Casemiro's departure. The club is eyeing Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte as his potential replacement. Despite a challenging season in Ligue 1, the 23-year-old Uruguayan could find a fresh start at Old Trafford.

Manchester United is also keen on Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite but needs to increase their offer to entice Everton into considering a deal. The club hopes to pair Branthwaite with Matthijs De Ligt in central defense for the upcoming season.
