In an exclusive interview with Arise News, Doyin Okupe, the former Director General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign, revealed details about his encounter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that the Money Laundering charge against him was not based on legitimate grounds but rather driven by malicious intent.

Okupe recounted a conversation with the late Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, who warned him about an impending investigation by the EFCC. According to Okupe, Badeh advised him to secure the services of a good lawyer, as the EFCC was planning to target him due to his defense of Olisa Metuh, who was facing accusations at the time.

Subsequently, Okupe claimed that he was arrested by the EFCC at his apartment in Lagos two weeks after the warning from Badeh. He characterized his arrest as malicious persecution rather than a legitimate prosecution, asserting that he was unfairly targeted by the EFCC.

In his words;

"The Late Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, called me to his house for lunch. I went and he told me, Doyin, I said sir, he said go and get yourself a very good Lawyer. I said what's the matter, he said the EFCC are going to come after me. They're angry that I came to defend and to upturned many of the things that accused Olisa Metuh for. Two weeks after that, In Lagos, my apartment, EFCC came to arrest me. It was malicious, my arrest was malicious. It was not even a prosecution, it was persecution"
