According to Punch, the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite strike starting on Thursday, July 4, 2024. This decision follows the expiration of a two-week strike notice, prompted by issues including four months of unpaid salaries and 13 months of outstanding salaries owed to workers at Abia State University.

During a briefing in Abuja, SSANU outlined additional grievances, including the Federal Government's delay in announcing a new national minimum wage, and the backlog of unpaid N35,000 wage awards owed by many institutions for periods ranging from three to six months. The unions also voiced concerns over the lack of qualified individuals on the reconstituted boards of federal tertiary institutions, the establishment of new state universities without adequate funding for existing ones, and ongoing security challenges, notably the recent killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor at Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.
