Police face-off with pro-Palestinian students after destroying part of the encampment barricade on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, California, early on May 2, 2024.

Hundreds of police and protesters were in a tense stand-off early Thursday at the University of California, Los Angeles as unrest over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza simmers on US campuses.

Officers in riot gear moved in to start removing some barricades around the protest encampment, CNN footage showed, with several protesters detained.

Police used flashbangs to disperse the crowds gathered outside the encampment who were chanting “Let them go!,” an AFP journalist at the scene reported as helicopters hovered overhead.

“This is a peaceful protest, there are no counter-protestors tonight, so to call the police on them is despicable. This city should support them,” LA resident Jack Bedrosian who came along to show support told AFP.

The large police presence, including California Highway Patrol and LAPD officers, comes after law enforcement were criticized for being slow to act during violent clashes late Tuesday night when counter-protesters attacked an encampment of pro-Palestinian students.

“There is a large police presence from multiple law enforcement agencies after outside mobs attacked peaceful student protestors last night with no one protecting them,” LA City Controller Kenneth Mejia posted on social media site X from the campus earlier.

“Students now face police. We urge UCLA & City leaders to protect students, not do more harm.”

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, narrated an incident where a 17-year-old successfully hacked into his personal computer and bank account while being interrogated at his office in Lagos.

The anti-graft agency chairman made this known in a chat with editors at the EFCC Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja, last Tuesday.

Olukoyede recounted inviting the 17-year-old for questioning at his own office, only to witness the young hacker effortlessly bypass the security measures of his locked computer right before his eyes.

He said, “I brought into my Lagos office a seventeen-year-old boy who is studying History and Anthropology. He is in the 200 level. He is not doing anything science-related. The guy sat in my office in Lagos and demonstrated some things to me on my laptop.

N30,000 minimum wage a joke – Oshiomhole

The Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has said state governors can no longer cite low revenue as an excuse for withholding payment of a new minimum wage to their workers.

Oshiomhole said this is based on improved federal allocation payments to their coffers.

Oshiomhole, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, said that all concerned parties acknowledged that the current minimum wage of N30,000 is outdated and should be increased to meet with rising cost of living.

He also emphasised mutual agreement between workers and the Federal Government and the state counterparts that there is an urgent need to increase the minimum wage.

“I think there is some agreement between employers, including private employers and obviously the Federal Government, and I believe state governments that the current minimum wage of N30,000 is a joke,” Oshiomhole said.

The senator stated that state governors purchasing cars at current prices have no valid justification for failing to implement the new wage upon approval.

He added, “Those governors are buying cars at the current price. They don’t pity them because revenue is low. The truth of the matter is that we have to speak the language of the market. Those forces that drive prices also drive the cost of living.
