EFCC Opposes Godwin Emefiele’s Request for Overseas Medical Trip

According to PUNCH reports, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed a request by former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The EFCC, citing concerns about Emefiele being a flight risk, argued against the release of his passport, which is currently held by the court as part of his bail conditions.

Emefiele's legal team had filed an affidavit seeking the release of his passport to enable him to travel to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.

However, the EFCC, in its counter-affidavit, challenged the request, arguing that no medical report had been presented to the court substantiating the need for treatment abroad.

Furthermore, the commission asserted that there was no evidence to support the claim that the required medical care couldn't be obtained locally within Nigeria.

The prosecution also highlighted that Emefiele faces multiple charges in three separate cases before different judges.

The defence counsel countered the prosecution's arguments as speculative, suggesting that an international red alert could be issued to ensure Emefiele's arrest if he failed to return after his medical trip.

Following arguments from both parties, Justice Hamza Mu'azu of the Federal High Court in Lagos adjourned the ruling on the application until July 16, 2024.
