Nigeria To Deepen Bilateral Ties With US

Nigeria has taken more steps to deepen bilateral relations with the United States of America in varying sectors that will be of mutual benefits.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, made this known during the celebrations to mark the 248th U.S. independence anniversary organized by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja recently. He noted that Nigeria is acting in accordance with its foreign policy thrust and initiatives under President Bola Tinubu.

The minister pointed out that the strengthening of the Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation was one of the major foreign policy initiatives of the Tinubu administration to build capacity of the country in the area of fighting insecurity and enhancing economic development.

Former Minister of Information and Communication, Labaran Maku, has urged Northern state governors to pay rapt attention to insecurity, saying they are obstacles to the region’s development and must be resolved.

Maku said it was disheartening that people could no longer go to their farm, calling for peace to be restored in the region.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja after being conferred a fellowship award by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, he lamented that there was too much politics of violence in the North.

His words: “Governors in the North must stop this violence of terror, banditry, (insecurity) which has brought Nigeria to the ground. When people can’t go to farms, food production suffers, cost of living goes up. If I were a governor in the North today, my first duty is (will be) to ensure peace in my state.

LG Polls: Akwa Ibom PDP Begins Ward Tour, Seeks Peaceful Contest

Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections for the current interim administration to give way to elected officials, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has commenced an appraisal tour of political wards in the state.

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) chairman, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, charged aspirants to help diffuse tension by adhering strictly to the guidelines, as well as accept the outcome of the contest in the spirit of sportsmanship.

He gave the advice at the weekend during the team’s visit to Wards 5 and 6 stakeholders’ meeting held at Ikot Oku Usung village, in Ukanafun LGA.
