In a recent video on YouTube, Bishop David Oyedepo emphasized the critical importance of following God’s leading in a believer's life, rather than allowing external circumstances to dictate their actions. He illustrated this principle through the biblical account of Isaac, who was instructed by God not to go down to Egypt despite a severe famine. Instead, Isaac sowed in his current land and reaped a hundredfold that same year (Genesis 26:1-12).
Bishop Oyedepo warned that ignorance of God’s ways can lead to costly consequences. Citing Jeremiah 2:14-17, he illustrated how straying from God’s path invites unnecessary struggles. He likened this to a believer who, enticed by apparent opportunities elsewhere, abandons God’s guidance only to face unforeseen hardships. "The shepherd is absent, the wolves have a field day," he noted, referencing Isaiah 30:1-3, which admonishes against making decisions without divine counsel.
According to him, "His leading is what defines our environment, not our environment defining His leadings. He said to Isaac, “thou shall not go down to Egypt. Your destiny is tied to this place.” Isaac sowed in land and reaped in the same year a hundred fold in the time of famine. God’s leading puts you above all prevailing circumstances and situations. There is no nation without legitimately rich people and there is no nation without people in squalor, wallowing in poverty."
"So it is not the place, behind the events of the life of a believer is His leading not the place. The ignorance of God’s ways can be costly. Jeremiah 2:14-17. “No, I am not taking that. I know where it is happening now, it is China so I am going there.” Forces of hell come and begin to harass you because you are off His leading. The shepherd is absent, the wolves have a field day. Isaiah 30:1-3. Ignorance of God’s ways can be costly. Allow God to lead your way. Proverbs 16:13."
