Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma says he is sure the policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration will lead to Nigeria’s economic prosperity.

Uzodimma said this at an interactive session with journalists in Owerri on Wednesday.

He noted that journalists needed to properly explain to Nigerians the benefits of the policies instead of trumpeting the side effects.

He said: “Although the populace are experiencing economic hardship occasioned by the policies, they would eventually enjoy the benefits.”

He added: “Every discerning Nigerian knows that President Tinubu’s economic policies are sound and that they will salvage the country sooner than later.”

Uzodinma appealed to Nigerians to be patient as this as the current hardship faced by the country would be over.

Speaking at the Safe Online Youth Fellowship Bootcamp organised by NerdzFactory Company, supported by Meta at the Youth Development Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo said he was responsible for setting the country free from the bondage of immense debt, adding that he takes pride in the celebration of the 25 years an uninterrupted democracy, which started during his reign as democratic ruler in 1999.

“When I came in as elected president, I wanted to get debt relief because we were spending $3.5 billion every year servicing debt and the quantum of the debt was not going down. Today, I can say that I made Nigeria better than I found it from an economic perspective,” Obasanjo recalled.

“I found $3.7 billion in reserves, and we were spending almost all of that to service our debt. When I left office, we had achieved debt relief, reducing our debt to $3.6 billion while building up reserves to over $50 billion. I also facilitated an excess crude account worth over $25 billion.”

The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission, on Wednesday, called for the removal of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of misrepresenting facts about the recently concluded recruitment of police constables.

The police and the commission’s union had been at odds over the recently concluded recruitment of 10,000 police constables.

The police had in a statement on Saturday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, rejected the names of those recruited by the PSC.

Adejobi said the commission’s portal was scrutinised and it was discovered that “several names of persons purported to be names of successful candidates are those who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise.”

But the PSC accused the police of attempting to hijack the process.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, the Chairman, Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission, Adoyi Adoyi, accused the IG of causing chaos in the system.

He said, “We begin this press conference with a clarion call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, to immediately relieve the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, of his appointment as IGP.

Drug trafficking: Court declines Abba Kyari’s fresh bail request

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, dismissed a fresh application for bail by the detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, pending the conclusion of his trial.

Kyari is facing eight counts bordering on drug trafficking, brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

In two previous rulings, the court denied Kyari and his co-defendants bail and ordered their remand at Kuje prison.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja also refused Kyari’s request for bail.

Last month, however, the court granted Kyari temporary bail from prison custody to enable him to participate in his mother’s final burial rites.

At the sitting on Wednesday, Justice Nwite, in a ruling, held that Kyari’s application lacked merit.

He stated that Kyari failed to establish any exceptional circumstance that would warrant the exercise of judicial discretion in his favour.
