According to reports from Soccernet.ng, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is considering appointing former national team player Daniel Amokachi as one of the assistant coaches for the Super Eagles.

This week, the Super Eagles are expected to announce their new head coach, with Emmanuel Amunike, a former Barcelona winger, leading the race for the position.

Due to financial constraints, the NFF has reportedly abandoned its initial plan to hire a foreign coach for the national team, opting instead to appoint Amunike as the Super Eagles' coach.

After competing with other former internationals like Finidi George, Ndubuisi Egbo, Michael Nsien, and several others, Daniel Amokachi, the 1994 Africa Footballer of the Year, emerged as the preferred candidate for the assistant coaching role.

Sources suggest that Amunike will work alongside fellow AFCON 1994 winner Amokachi to help guide the Super Eagles towards their objectives.

During Jose Peseiro's nearly two-year tenure as Enyimba FC's head coach, Finidi served as his assistant.

Daniel Amokachi's outstanding resume

At just 17 years old, Amokachi participated in his first Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria in 1990, where Nigeria secured a silver medal.

In 1992, Amokachi made history in the Champions League by becoming the inaugural player to score in the competition's new format. His goal against CSKA Moscow in the opening group stage match propelled Club Brugge to a 1-0 victory.

He was twice honored with the prestigious Belgian Ebony Shoes Award, once in 1992 and again in 1994.

Amokachi and Amunike were teammates in the 1994 Super Eagles squad that clinched the African championship in Tunisia, marking Nigeria's second title win.

During Nigeria's debut appearance in the FIFA World Cup, held in the United States in 1994, both Amokachi and Amunike stood out as the only players to individually score two goals each.

In the 1996 Olympic Games final, both Amokachi and Amunike scored against Argentina, contributing to Nigeria's historic first-ever gold medal victory in football.

Amokachi had a successful playing career before retiring in 2006 due to injury, having played for clubs such as Everton and Beşiktaş. Following his retirement, he transitioned into coaching, initially joining Nasarawa United.

Furthermore, he has served as a coach for Finland's JS Hercules, as well as Nigerian clubs Ifeanyi Ubah and Enyimba FC.

Amokachi has also worked as an assistant coach for the Super Eagles under the leadership of Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu during their respective tenures.

One of his most notable coaching achievements occurred when he assisted Keshi in guiding Nigeria to their third consecutive continental championship title at the 2013 AFCON.
