According to Vanguard, Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, along with other individuals still in detention. Obi made this call during a press briefing in Onitsha on Saturday, emphasizing the lack of justification for Kanu's continued incarceration, especially in light of the court's decision to grant him bail.

Speaking to reporters, Obi expressed his concerns about the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu. He highlighted that the judicial system had already approved bail for Kanu, questioning the necessity of his continued confinement. Obi's remarks reflect growing discontent and the demand for the government to adhere to judicial rulings and ensure that justice is served fairly.

In addition to addressing the issue of detainees, Obi also discussed the economic agenda for the South East region. He called for greater cooperation among the governors of the South East, urging them to work closely together to foster development and address the region's economic challenges. Obi stressed the importance of unity among the governors and other groups within the zone to achieve meaningful progress.

Obi's comments come at a time when the South East faces various economic and political challenges. His call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and his emphasis on regional cooperation underscore the need for a cohesive approach to addressing the issues facing the South East and ensuring that justice and development go hand in hand.

He said: “Even in economic agenda, I want to see the South East governors work closely more. We want to see them come together and also bring together other groups in the zone.”
