Putin Calls Taliban Russia’s Allies Against Terrorism Despite Past Bans

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently referred to the Taliban as allies in the fight against terrorism, even though the group has been banned in Russia since 2003.

According to a report by Channels Television, Putin emphasized the importance of recognizing the Taliban's control over Afghanistan, stating that any governing authority would naturally seek stability in their country.

He made these remarks in Astana.

Over the years, Russia has developed relations with the Taliban.

Last month, Putin urged for stronger ties with the Taliban government.

Despite their controversial rule, the Taliban have been battling the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), a rival jihadist group, for years.

This conflict has led to significant violence, including a deadly attack in March when IS-K fighters killed over 140 people at a Moscow concert hall.

This was Russia's deadliest terrorist attack in nearly two decades.

Since their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban have imposed strict Islamic laws, severely restricting women's roles in public life.

Putin acknowledged that the Taliban have accepted certain responsibilities but highlighted the need for ongoing attention to internal issues in Afghanistan, both from within the country and the international community.
