The first female officer trained at the UK Military Academy is promoted to Lieutenant by the Army. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, has directed that Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh be promoted to the substantive rank of Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army. 

This was revealed on Wednesday by the Nigerian Defence Academy in a statement posted on X.com. The NDA released the following statement: 'The NDA Commandant, Major General JO Ochai, spoke at the decoration ceremony that took place today, June 26, 2024, at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club.

He praised Lt. Owowoh’s exceptional record as a Cadet, which granted her the unique opportunity to become the first female Nigerian to receive training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and her promotion to the new rank. 

Senior military leaders, academic and non-academic professionals, and family members were among the attendees at the ceremony.

Lieutenant Owowoh, 24, made history by being the first female officer from Nigeria to graduate from the United Kingdom's Sandhurst Royal Military Academy.

Oluchukwu, 24, accomplished this achievement as one of the 135 officer cadets who graduated on Friday, April 12, 2024, during RMAS' Sovereign's Parade in London.
