Youths set the INEC office in Ukum local government area on fire

According to Vanguard, A protest against bandit activities in Benue State took a destructive turn on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, as youths set the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ukum local government area on fire. The attack occurred at 2 pm, with no reported casualties.

The protesters, frustrated by the ongoing insecurity in the state, targeted government agencies, including the INEC office. The building was extensively damaged, with office furniture and essential materials destroyed. The list of destroyed items includes 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles.

According to INEC National Commissioner Sam Olumekun, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, Professor Sam Egwu, reported the incident. Security agencies have been alerted and have deployed personnel to the area to maintain order. The protest has also led to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew on the affected local government area by the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
