The recent youth protests in Kenya against high taxes and the rising cost of living have put the National Police Service (NPS) under intense scrutiny. At least 39 people have been killed during these demonstrations, and the police's handling of the situation has sparked widespread concern.

Many people are now questioning the whereabouts of Police Chief Mr. Koome. Normally, the police chief holds regular briefings during a national crisis, but Mr. Koome has been unusually silent.

So far, he has only issued one press statement despite the government having to call in the military to help manage the crisis. This has led some to wonder if he is still in charge.

Before the protests began last month, some senior police officers were already worried. They complained that the police chief had not held a meeting of commanders to plan a security response.

In such a crisis, it is usual for the Inspector General (IG) to meet with top officials, including his deputies, the Director of Criminal Investigations, and the General Service Unit commandant.

This lack of action has led to growing calls for Mr. Koome's resignation. Even some of President Ruto’s allies have started to question the police chief's handling of the crisis.

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot pointed out Mr. Koome’s absence and questioned if he is the right person for the job.

Many Kenyans are eagerly watching to see what steps will be taken next to address the crisis and restore confidence in the leadership of the National Police Service.
