GENZ 14 Day Focus Notice: July 5th to 20th 2024 Protests in Kenya for Accountability and Reform

opera.com 2024/7/24

Kenya saw a wave of protests from July 5–20, 2024, which marked a turning point in the country's demand for accountability and government reform.

These protests, which were instigated by complaints about corruption, a lack of transparency, and the misuse of governmental power, have sadly led to 41 fatalities, 380 injuries, and irrevocable harm to countless lives. In the name of fairness and just administration, many have lost their families and been rendered paralyzed.

William Ruto's resignation is a central demand of these rallies, as he is viewed by many as a representative of the structural problems afflicting the nation. The demonstrators, who are primarily members of Generation Z, have come together behind the catchphrase "A Luta Continua," indicating that they would not give up until their demands are fulfilled.

The state's actions, which include the purported use of force to quell opposition, have only strengthened the demonstrators' resolve. Protesters are unwavering in their dedication to election reform and transparency in the face of attempts to create division and divert attention from their cause. They have given Parliament a very clear ultimatum: create the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in two weeks or risk more violent protests.

With designated days like #IEBCTuesdays and #RutoThursdays, the movement has organized around particular action points with the goal of occupying IEBC offices, MPs' offices, and important highways until their demands are met. The demonstrations emphasize cooperation across ethnic divisions and a communal effort for change, and they are distinguished by their lack of leadership and tribes.

International observers have expressed worry about human rights breaches and the need for communication to stop the violence from getting worse as the protests became more violent. While things are still heated, there is hope because Kenyan young are showing a strong commitment to using nonviolent, yet focused activism to shape the future of their country.

Fundamentally, the unrest engulfing Kenya highlights a want for fairness and change. They act as a sobering reminder to both the international world and the government of Kenya that the country's citizens' aspirations for just governance and accountability cannot be disregarded or repressed.
