Man Utd urged to sign Premier League star instead of key £42m target

According to Metro, Manchester United should reconsider their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to former Liverpool star Phil Thompson.

Thompson expressed concerns over United's strategy, suggesting that signing De Ligt could mirror the unsuccessful tenure of Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.

Following Erik ten Hag's contract extension and Varane's departure, United are actively seeking a new center-back. While negotiations for De Ligt progress, Thompson believes United should prioritize signing Premier League-experienced players. He specifically advocates for Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, despite United's previous unsuccessful bid for the 22-year-old.

"Matthijs de Ligt is talented, but United needs someone familiar with the Premier League," Thompson remarked to Paddy Power. "Given Varane's experience from Real Madrid didn't pan out, De Ligt might also face a settling-in period, which United can't afford."

Thompson, reflecting on Liverpool, expressed interest in acquiring England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Despite ongoing Euros commitments, Thompson views Gordon as a potential asset for Liverpool, especially with uncertainties surrounding current players like Luis Diaz.

"Liverpool should consider Anthony Gordon," Thompson added. "He offers versatility as a right-footer on the left wing, complementing the squad especially if there are potential departures like Diaz."

Thompson acknowledged the competitive challenge Gordon would face for a starting role at Liverpool but sees him as a valuable addition to the squad, contingent on the right price.
