Russia's recent movements into Niger, Mali, and the Sahel region, coupled with the US proposal to establish a military base in Nigeria, have heightened tensions between the two global powers. This development has sparked concerns about potential confrontation, particularly in a region already grappling with insecurity and instability.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, shared his thoughts on this matter during an interview on Arise TV. He highlighted the broader implications of the US military base proposal, emphasizing that Nigeria wasn't the sole country affected by this decision. Liberia, among others, was also consulted, indicating a regional impact.

In addressing the potential rejection of the proposed US military base, Professor Bolaji stressed that Nigeria's decision would reverberate beyond its borders. He pointed out that Nigeria's stance would not only affect its own interests but also those of neighboring West African countries.

He said, "Nigeria was not the only country affected, Liberia was also consulted (when the issue of United States having a military base in West Africa was raised) and pleasure was brought to other West African countries. Nigeria is not the only country that is going to be affected if we decide to have a United States military base in Nigeria."
