Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has declared a full-scale military operation to combat escalating violence in the Sankera axis, particularly in Ukum Local Government Area, due to armed bandits.

Recently, bandits allegedly killed several residents of Ayati hamlet, triggering riots and the destruction of public and private property. This situation led to the decision for a military response.

Governor Alia, speaking from Makurdi, condemned the bandits' actions and expressed sympathy for the victims, noting that the bandits targeted civilians as punishment for perceived betrayals.

He acknowledged that although the protests began peacefully, criminals exploited them to create disorder in Sankera.

In response, security forces have arrested two robbers and confiscated a significant amount of weapons and vehicles. Governor Alia praised the bravery of the injured security officers.

He also announced the establishment of a commission of inquiry to investigate the causes of the violence, underscoring the government's commitment to restoring peace and holding perpetrators accountable, as reported by Vanguard.

Governor Alia assured ongoing efforts to secure the state and urged the public to cease the violence.
