Ruto to MPs: If you use CDF properly, you'll be re-elected

Senate could be planning to cut off Constituency Development Funds (CDF) in remarks by Kiambu county Senator Karungo Thang'wa is anything to go by.

Speaking on Friday in the senate, the UDA party senator stated that the government should consider cutting off funds being given to MPs as CDF and instead channel the funds to the Education Ministry and makes education completely free in the country.

The senator observed that the country gives out over Ksh80 billion to MPs, Women Reps and Governors to be given out as bursaries to students. He said the government should take all the money and makes secondary school education absolutely free for all instead of using MPs to give out bursaries.

"Take a pen because we have to do some maths. Every constituency has over Ksh50 million in bursaries. If you multiply this by over 290 constituencies, you will have over Ksh20 billion. Every Governor has Education Bursary Funds of between Ksh200 to 300 billion shillings. If you multiply this by 47 counties, you will get about Ksh50 billion, you add this the Women Rep's bursaries and you get about Kh80 billion. Why don't we just give these money to schools and make education free, why don't we take it direct to schools and make high school education free? Do I have to give the money to an MP to take it to the schools," he posed amid cheers from colleagues.

His remarks were applauded by many in the Senate and this could be seen as one of the proposals to cut down expenditures by the government. Among those who supported the idea is Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale
