On 5th July, 2024 the Ekiti State, former Commissioner of Information and Civic Orientation, Mr. Lanre Ogunsuyi during an interview with Vanguard while reacting to the resurgence of kidnappings in the South Western parts of the country, revealed that the resurgence of kidnappings in the Southwest was quite worrisome, it was on the decline, but now on the increase, people could say that kidnapping happened in the region as a result of the current economic hardship facing the country.

According to Vanguard, the Ekiti State, former Commissioner of Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Lanre Ogunsuyi said "The resurgence of kidnappings in the Southwest is quite worrisome, it was on the decline but now on the increase. One can say that this is happening now as a result of endemic poverty, and corruption everywhere with the proceeds of corruption being flaunted by the corrupt people, so the community is reacting. There is also the issue of our porous borders. What we can do to solve this is to improve our security and increase police personnel at all points. We can do community engagement, through community policing and open lines of communication, such that people can anonymously report any threat of kidnapping in their communities."

On the other hand, the President of the Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW), Oladotun Hassan said that they must address the root causes of the resurgence of kidnappings in the South Western parts of the country, by tackling poverty, inequality, and lack of economic opportunities, as well as improving access to education and health care in the region. He also added that it was not enough to simply apprehend and punish those who commit kidnapped and other related crimes, they must also address the underlying factors that drive people to engage in violent behavior.
