Donald Trump was set to unveil his running mate on Monday as supporters gathered in Milwaukee for the Republican Party convention, an extravaganza turbocharged by the attempted assassination of the former president.

With the country still reeling from images of a bloodied Trump being escorted off a rally stage at the weekend, some 50,000 Republicans descended on the shores of Lake Michigan for the four-day convention.

Trump will announce his vice presidential candidate later Monday, according to Fox News, with the top possible names including two senators — J.D. Vance of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida — and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

Convention organizers insisted the show would go on despite the attempt on Trump’s life on Saturday.

13 killed in Benue communities

Gunmen suspected to be armed herders have killed 13 people in separate attacks on Benue communities on Sunday.

According to locals, 12 people were reportedly killed in Egwuma in Agatu, and one displaced person returning from a farm in Gwer West LGAs of the state.

Some locals who spoke to journalists on Monday in a telephone chat said that one displaced person was injured and five others still missing.

At Egwumoa, in Agatu LGA, suspected armed herders were said to have attacked the community in a killing spree.

Navy retrains personnel on weapon handling

The Central Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has started a retraining exercise on marksmanship and weapons handling for its personnel to reduce collateral damage in their civil engagement duties.

The exercise Second Quarter CNC 2024 Range Classification and Small Arms Firing Exercise was held on Monday, at the Elele 5 Battalion Barracks of the Nigerian Army.

It is aimed at ensuring that naval personnel act with professionalism in civil engagements, among other objectives.

The Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Samson Bura, led officers and ratings in the exercise, stating that continuous qualitative training of its manpower would effectively safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and resources.

Passengers accuse policemen of extortion on Anambra roads

Some tricycle passengers along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Anambra State have cried out over the incessant harassment and extortion from security operatives mounting roadblocks on the axis.

One of the victims, who identified himself as Kingsley Ebuka appealed to the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, to caution his men against incessant harassment, humiliation and extortion of passengers on major roads in the state.

He alleged that the level of extortion by policemen who mount roadblocks on the roads in the state, particularly in the commercial city of Onitsha has become so inexplicable that life has become unbearable for the road users in the state.

Briefing journalists at the Human Rights office in Onitsha, on Monday, Ebuka alleged that he boarded a tricycle at Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday and was heading to a destination in Onitsha.
