Abia State Government Suspends Tricycle, Motorcycle Restrictions

opera.com 2 days ago

In a surprise move, the Abia State Government has announced the suspension of its planned restriction on tricycle and motorcycle operations in the state. The restriction, which was set to take effect on July 1, 2024, would have prohibited tricycle and motorcycle operation between 7pm and 6am. However, following appeals from the public, the government has pushed back the implementation date to August 1, 2024.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the suspension is a response to numerous pleas from Abians who sought more time to prepare for the effective implementation and enforcement of the policy. While the restriction has been suspended, the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles in the transport sector will proceed as scheduled, starting from July 1, 2024.

According to Vanguard, the government's decision to suspend the restriction is a welcome relief to tricycle and motorcycle operators who would have been affected by the policy. The move is seen as a gesture of goodwill by the government, demonstrating its willingness to listen to the concerns of its citizens. The additional time provided by the suspension will allow operators to prepare for the eventual implementation of the restriction, which aims to improve safety and security in the state.

The Abia State Government's decision to suspend the restriction on tricycle and motorcycle operations is a testament to its commitment to engaging with the public and addressing their concerns. As the government moves forward with the enumeration and registration of commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles, it is clear that the welfare of Abians remains a top priority.
