According to the report from the Sun, the immediate past President General of Igbo Delegates Assembly in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, Chief Chi Nwogu acknowledged the existence of state-level security forces in various Northern states, citing the Hisbah as an example of a local vigilance group that performs a range of security tasks.
He noted that the Southwest has implemented a regional state police system and encouraged other regions, such as the Southeast, to follow suit in order to address their specific security challenges.
By adopting and formalizing similar systems, he argued that regions can better tackle security threats and improve overall safety for their citizens.
He said, "Many states in the Northern Nigeria are already operating a state police in various forms while discouraging others from doing same. In many Northern states, you have a local vigilance group called Hisbah. They perform all forms of security tasks including traffic control at events, arrests of persons, raids on beer parlour and hotels, search big and small vehicles on highways, control prices in local settings among others.What the Southwest is operating is clearly a state police at the regional level. It is now left for others like states in the South East to adopt the system, operationalize it and make it official so as to help check the regional security issues that are threatening the East."
