According to Punch, The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced an indefinite strike action starting on Thursday, July 4, 2024. This decision comes after the expiration of a two-week strike notice due to issues including four months of unpaid salaries and 13 months of unpaid salaries to workers at Abia State University.

In a briefing in Abuja, SSANU highlighted additional grievances, such as the Federal Government's delay in announcing a new national minimum wage and the backlog of unpaid N35,000 wage awards owed by many institutions for three to six months. The unions also expressed concerns over the limited number of educated individuals on the reconstituted boards of federal tertiary institutions, the proliferation of new state universities amidst poor funding of existing ones, and the ongoing security challenges, exemplified by the recent killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor at Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.
