EFCC Urges Patience Amid Protests Over Delay in Minister's Corruption Probe
According to Leadership, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called for patience as it assures the public of a thorough investigation into the alleged N70 billion corruption case involving the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State.
Speaking in response to protests by the Tinubu Youth and Women Network at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, the Commission's spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, emphasized the need for detailed and comprehensive investigations into corruption cases, including Matawalle's.
Oyewale assured the protesters that their demands would be communicated to the Commission's chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and reiterated the Commission's commitment to upholding justice and accountability.
Meanwhile, the protesters, led by Aliyu Yunusa, formally requested the EFCC to reopen the probe into the corruption allegations against Matawalle.
They highlighted their dedication to collaborating with the government to combat corruption and ensure transparency within the system.
During Matawalle's tenure as Governor from 2019 to 2023, there were allegations of mismanagement of public funds and resources, prompting the EFCC to initiate investigations into the matter.
The protesters emphasized the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the mismanagement of public funds, citing the need for justice and deterrence against future corruption.
The group's demands underscored the broader public sentiment towards combating corruption in Nigeria, particularly within government institutions.
