Rivers State Governor Accuses Opponents of Plotting to Justify Emergency Rule After Failed Explosion

opera.com 5 days ago

Governor Fubara of Rivers State claimed the failed attempt to detonate an explosive at Hotel Presidential was a plot by his opponents to call for emergency rule and undermine the state, though he stated he is defending the state and the suspect has been apprehended.

MOSOP urged politicians in Rivers to avoid violence and prevent the current political crisis from escalating, as it would harm the state's interests, while a faction of the APC expressed concern about the potential for guerrilla warfare.

Fubara said the law appears ineffective against offenders, and no governor in Nigeria has faced the level of abuse he has from former local government chairs, but he remains focused on governing well despite the attacks.

The Senate committee chairman praised Fubara's commitment to peace and good governance, and called for the FCT Minister Wike to work towards resolving the situation.

The police confirmed a young man died in an explosion during a protest, and MOSOP warned against violence and called for the rule of law to be respected in addressing the crisis.

The APC faction claimed the recent protests appear deliberately orchestrated to justify calls for emergency rule, despite no such emergency existing, and expressed deep concern over the use of guerrilla warfare tactics in Rivers' politics.

The faction drew a connection between the current incident and a previous bombing of an APC campaign venue, suggesting the same group is responsible while evading accountability.

The APC faction challenged the police to thoroughly investigate the protest organizers and leaders, whom they assert are known political figures supporting the call for emergency rule in Rivers.

Nwauju accused the protesters of employing a deliberate strategy of generating public outcry and deflecting blame to deceive the public about their true motives.
