Lagos Government Urges Calm as State Experience Over 9hrs of Rainfall

In the face of severe flash flooding across Lagos State, the local government has called for calm among residents, according to DAILY POST reports.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement on Wednesday addressing the ongoing crisis.

According to Wahab, Lagos has experienced approximately nine hours of continuous, heavy rainfall since the early hours of the day.

This prolonged downpour has been compounded by the persistent heavy rains the state has endured over the past week, resulting in a significant rise in the water level of the Lagos lagoon.

The commissioner stated that the flash floods have inundated several areas, including Iyana-Oworo, which connects to the Third Mainland Bridge, as well as numerous other locations.

However, Wahab assured that the floodwaters will recede once the rains subside and the lagoon level returns to normal.

To mitigate the situation, the state government has deployed officials from the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to major flood hotspots, including Iyana-Oworo, to clear any obstructions and manage the flooding.

Wahab urged all residents, especially those living in low-lying areas, to relocate to higher grounds as a matter of necessity to safeguard lives and properties.

He also strongly cautioned against attempting to wade through the floodwaters with vehicles, as it takes only a foot of flowing water with a high tide to sweep away a car, regardless of the number of occupants.
