On 24th June, 2024 the Sokoto State People's Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement released by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Hassan Sanyinnawal while reacting to the plan of the administration of the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto to dethrone the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, urged the Sokoto Government not to make any attempts to sack the Sultan from office because the Sultan of Sokoto was not just a traditional ruler but also the leader of Muslim Ummah in the country.

According to Punch Newspaper, the Publicity Secretary of the Sokoto State People's Democratic Party (PDP), Hassan Sanyinnawal said "I want to urge the state government not to make any attempts to sack the Sultan from office. We know it was part of their slogan during the campaign that ‘new governor, new Sultan’; they should drop the idea. The Sultan of Sokoto is not just a traditional ruler but also the leader of Muslim Ummah in the country, therefore, any attempt to remove him will be resisted by every Nigerian. Already, we are looking at the recent removal of some of the district heads and our lawyer may still have to challenge that. We don’t want anything to disrupt our traditional institutions in the state."

Hassan Sanyinnawal added that they heard that the Sokoto State Attorney General and the Commissioner of Justice were submitting a bill to the Sokoto State Assembly to transfer the power to nominate a traditional ruler or district head from the Sultan to the Governor. He also boasted that they would resist the bill by all legal means.
