As Nigeria marks 25 years of continuous democracy, Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the nation's economic struggles.

According to Channels Television, June 12, celebrated annually as Democracy Day, arrives amidst significant challenges for many Nigerians, including widespread poverty and numerous security issues.

In his message on Tuesday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar contended that the APC's nine-year tenure has inflicted severe hardship on the populace.

According to Atiku, the APC’s administration has not only exacerbated economic woes but also deepened the country’s security challenges, leaving many Nigerians in dire straits.

He argued that the failure of the APC to address these critical issues has led to unprecedented levels of hardship for the average citizen.

Atiku's criticism extended beyond the ruling party to encompass opposition parties, which he accused of failing to consolidate and present a united front capable of defeating the APC.

He reproached these parties for their inability to offer a compelling governance blueprint that could earn the trust and support of Nigerians.

Reflecting on the broader significance of Democracy Day, Atiku emphasised that one of its secondary objectives is to honour Nigeria’s long and arduous journey towards establishing a stable democratic society.

He reiterated his belief that democracy, despite its flaws, remains the irreplaceable ideal for governance.

Atiku Abubakar said, "The past nine years have thrown up a regime of extreme hardship manifested in excruciating poverty and unprecedented levels of violence and insecurity upon our people.

"Sadly, the ruling All Progressives Congress is to blame for bringing forth this dawn of gloom."
