A distraught mother has revealed how her son, Erasmus Emhenya, was arrested and tortured to death by the police officers in Abuja.

On Brekete Family, a human rights advocacy program, the mother said that she received the news of her son's death from a source in the cell.

According to Sahara Reporters on Thursday, the lady narrated how she attempted to identify her son's body, only to be met with callous disregard by the police.

She described how one of the police officers referred to her son as a "bagger" when she went to the station to see him.

She said, "When I went to the police station to see my son, the cops told their colleagues to throw this 'bagger.'"

In a press statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, Josephine Adeh, said that contrary to the claims on social media, Erasmus did not die as a result of torture.

She said, "We wish to clarify that the unfortunate death of Erasmus Emhenya was not due to torture, as alleged in certain quarters and on social media."

She added, "Discrete investigations were undertaken to ascertain both the immediate and remote causes of Mr Emhenya's death."

In addition to that, the Police PRO called on concerned individuals and members of the public to come to the police headquarters in Abuja and access the information about the autopsy and investigation process.

She said, "We want to assure the public of our unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the fundamental rights of all individuals."
