Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been a vocal advocate for a coalition aimed at ousting the current administration under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku’s stance is based on his belief that Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy have failed to address the country’s significant challenges.

In his Democracy Day message, Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last election, criticised the state of democracy in Nigeria, stating that it “Continually fails to deliver the promises of prosperity and liberty to the people.”

Atiku specifically blamed the last nine years of APC rule for what he described as “Extreme hardship manifested in excruciating poverty and unprecedented levels of violence and insecurity.” He accused the APC of creating a “dawn of gloom.”

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced the Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, as the new Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, following the inactivity and the absence of effective leadership of the council under Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse.

Governor Fubara made the announcement at a special meeting he had with members of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.

The governor, in announcing the new chairman, terminated the appointment of the Paramount Ruler of Emohua Kingdom, Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse, who, within his statutory one-year tenure as chairman, allegedly failed to promote cordial relationship among members and with the state government. Governor Fubara pointed out that, under Eze Sergeat Awuse, the council produced a calendar for the year 2024, and insulted the state government by deliberately refusing to include the photographs of the governor and the deputy governor.

Fubara noted, such posture among others, clearly demonstrated that the council under that kind of leadership had not, and would never live up to expectations.

Akeem Lasisi waxes philosophical in seventh poetry album

Popular poet, Akeem Lasisi, has released his seventh album titled, ‘Orere: A Gift of Poems’.

Lasisi, who is the brain behind classic works such as ‘Eleleture’ and ‘Udeme’, stated that new album revolves around themes such as love and romance, culture, politics and good human relations.

The title track, ‘Orere’, celebrates love and the right to dancing and other forms of enjoyment; while ‘Ada, Ada; Kisimo’ and ‘Ododo Rose’ are a celebration of beauty and passion.

On another hand, in ‘Chibok Girls’, the poet revisits the fate of many of the schoolgirls kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014, many of whom are still in bondage, while their parents and other loved ones live with the nightmare.

Expatiating on the inspiration behind that particular track, Lasisi said, “I still feel pained like many other concerned people. The best way to feel what the abductees and their parents are going through is to imagine the tragedy happening to one. Imagine having one’s own daughter or son – or both in the jaws of terrorists, somewhere in the anonymous bush, not just for a month or a year, but for 10 long years. It is extremely painful.”

He, however, added that producing the track in honour of the kidnapped girls was a source of relief to him, noting that making a case for such embattled young ones was a debt that whoever had a voice should pay one way or the other.

He also stated that the 10-track album had been released to popular music platforms, such as Spotify and YouTube Music.

The Niger Delta Development Commission said over 2,000 patients benefitted from the first phase of its Free Health Medical Outreach in Ukwa General Hospital, Oke Ikpe in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, disclosed this while speaking at the week-long free healthcare programme.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Pius Ughakpoteni, and sent to newsmen.

Ogbuku stated that the free healthcare was organised in partnership with Derums Global Services to bring healthcare to rural communities across the Niger Delta region.

Ogbuku, who was represented by the Abia State representative on the NDDC Board, Chief Eruba Dimgba, said the medical outreach programme was targeted at changing the health situation and narrative of the medically underserved people in the region.

He remarked, “The programme has in the recent past been the flagship of the commission, serving to endear the commission to these medically needy communities, with documented evidence and testimonies, abounding of their beneficial impact in enhancing the quality of life of the rural poor in the Region.

“The objective of the programme undertaken in collaboration with various healthcare organisations is to ensure access to good healthcare services by removing financial barriers to accessing good and qualitative healthcare services posed by the prevailing high costs of healthcare services in the midst of a weakened Health system and infrastructure.”
