The factional Speaker of the House of Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has stated that the lawmakers do not need his visit of their quarters, noting that all the building in the premises were still new and not due for renovation.

Amaewhule, spoke after the governor of the state made a brief stop over at the facility to know that state of the facility.

The speaker, who led a team including, Major Jack, the Leader of the House, Samuel Nwanosike, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Barr George Ariolu, Obio/Akpor LGA Chair, to the Assembly quarters wondered why the governor would visit their quarters uninvited.

Amaewhule expressed fears that the governor was on the move to demolish the assembly quarters, noting that the buildings in the facility were still new and not due for renovation.

He said: “That is the building. I want the world to see the building. There is nothing wrong with the buildings. It is not even up to two years old. It was constructed by the immediate past administration and commissioned in August 2022.

“Rivers people were stunned this afternoon when they got the information that the governor of the state, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, stormed the quarters of the Rivers State House of Assembly, yet in another attempt to demolish the quarters just the same way he demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.

Wike cautions Apo traders against protesting without following due process

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has cautioned traders against arbitrary protests without following due process, saying such acts will be considered an attempt at intimidation.

The minister was reacting to the action of traders from the Apo Mechanic village, who besieged the entrance of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat, demanding that the FCT Minister sign the lease agreement to enable them to move to their permanent site at Wassa District.

The traders, who carried different placards commending the developmental strides of the Minister, however, appealed to him to sign the lease agreement that had been entered into since 2015.

N2.7bn fraud: Court grants Sirika, daughter, in-law N100m bail each

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, on Thursday granted the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Hadi Abubakar Sirika, bail.

The court also granted his daughter, Fatimah Hadi Sirika and in-law, Jalal Hamma bail.

Sirika, his daughter, son-in-law and Al-Duraq Investment Ltd, were charged to court over alleged N2.7bn fraud in connection with the botched Nigerian Air project by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Before the trial judge, Justice Sylvanus Orji granted the bail request of the defendants, they pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them after it was read out to them.

Sirika was docked on a 6-count amended criminal charge before Justice Oriji.

The prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs SAN, had informed the court of an amended charge by the EFCC dated May 7, and filed on May 8, which was not opposed by the counsel to the defendants.

The defendant’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), who is Sirika’s counsel, informed the court of his client’s bail application dated May 6.

We remain committed to humanitarian services – Anambra Red Cross

The Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross Society has joined the international community to celebrate World Press Day and restated its commitment to disaster management in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Awka, on Wednesday, the Chairman of the state chapter of the Red Cross Society, Prof. Charity Emelie, called for support for humanitarian interventions in Anambra.

Emelie said this year’s commemoration event is themed, ‘Keeping humanity alive’, which meant understanding and kindness towards other people and keeping hope alive.

She listed the fundamental principles of the Red Cross to include humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality, which summed up its movement ethics and core mission.

She stressed that the society as a first-time responder to disaster management had carried out emergency management, both in cash transfers and humanitarian efforts in communities in Anambra West, Orumba, Anambra North, Ogbaru and Awka North local government areas of the state.

She said, “The mission of the Nigerian Red Cross is to alleviate the situation of the vulnerable people which include those affected by disaster, epidemics, armed conflicts and the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas among whom are women, children, aged, displaced and vulnerable people.

“It is the World Red Cross Day which is done in commemoration of the birth of the founder, Jean Henry Dunant, a Swiss citizen born on May 8, 1928 in Geneva, Switzerland.
