EPL Game Week 34: The Preview

opera.com 2024/5/3

It's the 34th round of the 23/24 English Premier League season, and we are definitely in for another round of entertaining football.

With the twists and turns we witnessed last week, in both the title and top 4 race getting spicy, it promises to be a great weekend of football in the English top tier.

The game week starts off with two games that are really important in the struggle to stay in the Premier League, as Luton welcome Brentford and Sheffield United welcome Burnley, featuring 3 teams that are desperate to beat the drop and have another go next season.

Luton vs Brentford

Luton are in 18th place, 5 points clear of Burnley in 19th and 1 point behind Nottingham Forest in 17th; a win would definitely take them out of the relegation zone for at least 24 hours before Nottingham Forest plays.

Sheffield United vs Burnley

Sheffield United are arguably facing the drop to the Championship, with just 16 points from 32 games and sitting bottom of the standings; only a late surge, probably one without blemishes, would give them a chance to pull off a miracle.

Burnley, a team that has somewhat not been able to live up to the hype, coming off a great season that led to them being promoted, have just not been able to find their feet in the biggest of stages so far.

Kompany's team have realized that it's a different level, but it might be too little, too late for them, with 20 points from 33 games, sitting in 19th, and with Luton 5 points ahead; a win over rock bottom Sheffield United might help them, in hopes Luton lose.

Wolves vs Arsenal

Saturday ends with Arsenal traveling to the Molineux to face Wolves. Wolves haven't won a game in their last 5 matches, and Arsenal are coming off a poor run of 3 games without a win, getting knocked off the top of the league and suffering the heartbreak of getting knocked out of the Champions League in midweek.

Arsenal need a win to keep hopes of silverware alive, seeing as City doesn't play this weekend, as they're off on cup duty. The Gunners are the wounded lions in this fixture and might harbor too much rage for Wolves to handle.

A win would take Arsenal one point above Man City and go one place up the standing into 1st place.

Everton vs Nottingham Forest

To start the Sunday, Everton hosts Nottingham Forest, coming off a 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea; they'll look to recover a bit of form and put it behind them.

It won't be easy though, as Nottingham Forest need a win to stay clear of the relegation zone, with just one point separating them from Luton in 18th.

According to Opta, Everton have the 4th best defense in the Premier League, having kept 9 clean sheets. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, haven't won an away game in 7 attempts.

Aston Villa vs Bournemouth

Aston Villa welcome Bournemouth to our first fixture in the top 4 tussle, with the Villains sitting in 4th, in pole position for Champions League football next season, if only they can keep winning, but with Spurs right behind them, just 3 points off, it might be an uncomfortable ride to the end.

Aston Villa, having won their last two EPL games, especially the notable win against Arsenal last game week, they'll definitely back themselves to win this game.

Bournemouth haven't been terrible themselves, winning 3 of their last 5 games, losing once and drawing against Manchester United in the previous game week. That's to say, they're no pushovers.

A win for Villa would definitely keep them in 4th for another week.

Crystal Palace vs West Ham

Crystal Palace welcome West Ham in a London derby that doesn't have much attached to it. A mid-table clash and maybe a late push for a European spot for West Ham.

The Hammers were knocked out of Europe during the week and now have to finish the season strong.

Fulham vs Liverpool

The weekend is rounded up by Liverpool taking on Fulham at Craven Cottage. An important game.

Opta Stats show that The Reds have had a bad run of form, winning just twice in 5 games, losing two in that run, which has seen them drop from the top of the League to 3rd place, and get kicked out of the Europa League by Atalanta in quite embarrassing fashion.

Jurgen Klopp's farewell tour is gradually turning sour and his team will need to rally around and keep the heat on and stay on the heels of City, to keep the hope of major silverware alive.

A win at Fulham would help them leapfrog the cup-tied Manchester City for at least a week.
