Lagos State, Nigeria's bustling commercial hub, is currently grappling with a severe flooding crisis. This alarming situation has been highlighted by Gbadebo Rhodes, the former Labour Party Governorship candidate in Lagos State. His insights cast a spotlight on the urgent need for immediate and effective action to address this escalating problem.

Gbadebo Rhodes draws attention to a critical concern: "Lagos State is also listed as one of the fastest sinking cities in the world." The city's low-lying coastal geography makes it particularly vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change and rising sea levels. Every year, residents and businesses suffer immense losses due to recurring floods, which wreak havoc on the economy and infrastructure.

"I want to start by painting a background, which is the fact that this same group of people has been in charge of this state for almost 24 years, right? In terms of the party, not the people—yeah, not the same people—but they have a blueprint, they have a plan for the city, and this plan has been in existence for some time," Rhodes remarks. Despite this long-standing governance, the flooding issue persists, signalling a need for a more effective and sustainable approach.

He further adds, "It is said that by 2100, most of Lagos will not be habitable with the current state of things. Now, when you look at the fact that every year we deal with this same thing again and again and again—people are losing possessions, businesses are being completely destroyed by floods. Think about how many cars have to have their engines replaced and the significant damage done in this economy. We go through this every year. We know that we are a low-lying coastal city."

The repetitive nature of these floods underscores the urgency for innovative and comprehensive solutions. Addressing the flooding crisis in Lagos requires a multifaceted approach involving government action, community engagement, and international support. As one of the world's fastest-sinking cities, Lagos stands at a critical juncture where decisive and collaborative efforts are essential to safeguard its future.

By focusing on robust infrastructure development, improved urban planning, and effective disaster management strategies, Lagos can mitigate the impact of floods and protect its residents and economy. The need for immediate action is clear, and the insights provided by Gbadebo Rhodes serve as a crucial reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.
