Hundreds of players have provided assists in Premier League history. However, there is one that stands out for doing so after his 40th birthday as per Theanalyst. Who is this iconic assist provider?

Edwin van der Sar in action

This legendary footballer is Edwin van der Sar. The iconic goalkeeper was already past three months into his 40th birthday when he achieved the feat. This Dutch goalie did it for Manchester when the club hosted Aston Villa in February, 2011. His long distance kick found Wayne Rooney who netted within the first minute of action. However, the Dutchman conceded once in the game to end the goal with 3-1 win for the hosts.

It is worthy of note that the former Ajax, Juventus and Fulham shot stopper won 4 Premiership titles before leaving the club. He also got a UEFA Champions League (UCL) trophy during his stint at the Old Trafford outfit. Meanwhile, he was credited with a goal an assist for Ajax before leaving the Dutch top flight in the late 1990s.

However, the oldest outfield player to assist a goal in the English Premier League is Teddy Sheringham. This striker was just 6 days shy of his 40th birthday when he provided his last assist in the competition. He did it for West Ham in their March, 2006 visit to Wigan. The Englishman set Nigel Reo-Coker for the winning goal of the encounter.

Other players that provided EPL assists close to their 40th birthdays are Ryan Giggs, Jussi Jääskeläinen and Stuart Pearce. Giggs was 39 years old when he did so whereas the other two guys did it while aged 38.
