According to vanguard, The recent initiative by South-East governors and National Assembly members to engage with President Bola Tinubu regarding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has ignited diverse reactions across Nigeria. Kanu's case remains contentious, with some viewing him as a symbol of the struggle for self-determination, while others see him as a threat to national unity.

Several prominent Igbo groups and individuals, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Olisa Agbakoba, and Ikoro Ndigbo, have welcomed the dialogue as a step towards a political solution. Agbakoba emphasized, "It's very good," advocating for a political resolution. Conversely, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum, criticized the proposal, arguing that releasing Kanu would undermine the criminal justice system and embolden separatist movements.

The governors' communique, read by Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, reflects a collective push for Kanu's release, further supported by South-East senators and House representatives. These lawmakers argue that an out-of-court settlement is essential for restoring peace in the region. The IPOB leader’s continued detention has significantly impacted the South-East, hindering businesses and development, and exacerbating insecurity.

Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), noted that relying solely on force has escalated insecurity, urging the government to reassess its strategies. He stated, “Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is a necessary step towards de-escalating violence and insecurity in the South East.”
