In a recent interview with Arise TV, Cletus Obun, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighted the pivotal role of the party register in confirming membership. Obun, one of the APC's founding members, clarified that simply swearing an affidavit in court or conducting a press conference does not validate membership.
Obun emphasized that according to the party's constitution, membership hinges on having one's name listed in the register. He stressed that no Nigerian court has the authority to decree someone as an APC member, underscoring the party register as the sole credible evidence of membership.
Regarding the situation in Rivers State, Obun expressed his expectation that the National Assembly should have assumed control of the State's House of Assembly by now. He pointed out that the 27 individuals who publicly claimed APC membership through televised proclamations and press conferences cannot be recognized as members through legal means. As a founding member, Obun reiterated that no court in Nigeria possesses the jurisdiction to confer membership in a political party, particularly the APC.
During an interview on Arise Television, he commented, "What is happening in Rivers State would have, by now, I expect the national assembly would have taken over the House of Assembly in Rivers State. First of all, the 27 people who came and made proclamations on television and at press conferences saying that they're members of the APC I'm a foundation member of APC; joining APC cannot even be declared by a court. No court of law in Nigeria can make you a member of a political party, especially the APC, that I know of. I know the constitution well. For you to be a member, your name must be on the world 'register', not by press conference or swearing an affidavit in court, which can make you a member of APC."
