Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has shared his frustration over the level of corruption in the country.

Speaking while receiving the management team of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) led by its Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, Olukoyede, said anytime he checks case files and sees the amount stolen, he wonders how the country still exists.

He said if Nigerians saw some case files they would weep.

He said public corruption ranks as the biggest cause of corruption in Nigeria, adding that if public corruption was taken out of the polity, the country would fare better.

Russian military repels Ukrainian attack

The Russian military, has repelled attacks by two unmanned Ukrainian drone boats carrying explosives on the Russian port city of Novorossiysk, the Defence Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday.

The boats were destroyed in the sea, according to the ministry.

Novorossiysk on the Black Sea is a large port, where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has stationed many of its warships for use against Ukraine.

The ministry initially did not mention any potential damage. It came after local media reported explosions in the area.

The youth of Ibeku ancient kingdom in Umuahia, Abia State, have expressed their support for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The youths drew parallels between their kinsman, Kanu, and the reverred late South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who "stood for truth, equity, and justice."

In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, after an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening, at their national secretariat in Isieke Ibeku, the youths expressed regret over what they described as a misunderstanding of Kanu's pursuit of fairness and equality for all Nigerians.

The communique signed by their National President, Martins Chiedozie Nwosu; and Secretary, Chibuzor Onwukamuche, respectively, urged Tinubu to free Kanu, just as the Yoruba nation promoter, Sunday Igboho; and social crusader, Omoyele Sowore, also charged for treason; had been freed.

I never lobbied to extend my tenure — IGP Egbetokun

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has debunked reports alleging that he has been lobbying the National Assembly to tamper with the Nigeria Police Act 2020 to elongate his tenure and year of service of personnel in the force.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the IGP’s denial in a statement, saying it is vital to clarify unequivocally that the bill, was originally introduced during the 8th Assembly, but did not progress beyond the initial stages before the Assembly’s dissolution. It is standard legislative practice to review and update laws to align with current national realities.

The proposed amendment seeks to extend the years of service for police officers from 35 to 40 years, and the age limit from 60 to 65 years.

Adejobi said: “The Nigeria Police Force is deeply perturbed by the dissemination of false information across various media platforms, notably the distorted publication by an online media, regarding the proposed amendment to the Nigeria Police Act 2020.
