A clash between factions participating in the Egungun masquerade festival has resulted in one fatality and extensive property damage in Ikoyi and Apomu communities of Isokan local government area, Osun State.

The incident, which escalated on Sunday evening, involved members of different factions associated with the festival.

According to The Nation, the altercation erupted around 6:30 PM, sparking violent confrontations that claimed the life of one individual.

Hammed Abidoye, a resident of Apomu, attributed the clash to tensions between Egungun groups aligned with different factions of the Odua Peoples Congress in the two communities.

Reports indicate that houses, shops, and other properties were set ablaze during the unrest, exacerbating the tense situation in both Ikoyi and Apomu.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the incident and deployed tactical teams to maintain peace and safeguard lives and public assets.

In response to the escalating conflict, NSCDC spokesperson in Osun, Kehinde Adeleke, assured residents of the command's readiness to restore calm and uphold law and order.

Efforts to reach the Osun Police Command for further details were unsuccessful as spokesperson Yemisi Opalola did not respond to inquiries.
